One person was killed when an Israeli aircraft struck a car in Sidon, southern Lebanon, on Monday, in what is considered to be the deepest strike in the country since Hezbollah and Israel’s ceasefire ended in late November, according to Lebanon’s state news agency. The victim’s personality was not immediately known.
The Israeli army did not respond to the strike right away, which comes a day before the date for Israel’s complete removal from southeastern Lebanon under the peace deal that ended the 14-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
A car was engulfed in flames in footage that was circulated online. The attack took place close to Sidon’s municipal sports stadium and a Lebanese army checkpoint.
Late January was the original deadline for withdrawal, but Lebanon agreed to do so after being pressured by Israel and giving an extension until February 18. No word on whether Israeli troops will finish their withdrawal by Tuesday is still undetermined.
Israel claims to be attacking military installations with missiles and combat equipment since the ceasefire has been carried out in southern and eastern Lebanon. Israel and Lebanon have exchanged accusations of violating the ceasefire agreement.
