It is difficult to imagine how the writers would introduce a nonbinary figure without alienating loyal admirers. They are unable to make the new personality a joke-filled mess. They are trying to cater to the viewers, which may annoy them.
If they pretend to be any sex or “gender” they want to be, or at all, they will be extremely damaging. This is how they will perpetuate the cultural phenomenon of adolescent boys and girls battling puberty.
It is a vacation on a rope the writers don’t have to — and don’t — get. Fans want writers to regard the show’s memory because if they do this, the reruns are immediately wastes. Every stale episode may serve as a reminder of how much we enjoyed the show up until Disney completely destroyed it.
That’s all it takes, Disney. When you leave a terrible taste in people ‘ mouths that appears when they are choosing to watch a show with the remote in hand, the poor taste disappears with the push of a button to another channel.
