In a situation that has sparked outrage in the US, six US prison employees who are accused of beating a handcuffed Black criminal to death were indicted on Thursday on second-degree death charges.
Robert Brooks’s dying at New York’s Marcy Correctional Facility in December 2024 was caught on the soldiers ‘ bodycams.
The images showed some police officers restrainting a man who had had his hands cuffed behind him for at least part of the assault, with one uniform official kicking him during a fight.
As the criminal sat up, obviously wounded, an official put on a surgical gloves and grabbed him again by the neck and, with the help of a classmate, slammed him against a wall.
Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, called the scenes” startling and disturbing.”
Brooks, who was serving a 12-year word for rape at Marcy Prison, which is close to the French border, was killed by three people, who were later charged with involuntary murder.
A 10th prisoner was accused of cleaning up the field and making an attempt to mask information.
According to special prosecutor William Fitzpatrick’s prosecution, the accused “acted with disrespectful indifference to mortal life, aggressively engaged in conduct that created a grave risk of death to another individual, and thus caused Robert Brooks ‘ death.”
Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, stated that she had authorized the governor to “immediately commence the termination procedure for 14 individuals who were involved in the deadly attack on an imprisoned individual at Marcy Correctional Facility.”
” This action comes after I directed an internal review of the circumstances that lead to this individual’s death”, she said.
Crime committed by law enforcement officers frequently affects the United States.
In 2020, the death of George Floyd, a Black man who was suffocated under a police officer’s leg, sparked a massive influx of anti-racism rallies across the country.
