In an effort to save money for the taxpayer, the Trump presidency fired tens of thousands of national people, but the government will still be responsible for paying for these people ‘ unemployment benefits, which could amount to billions of dollars.

The White House is seeking to cut 10 % of the national workforce, having issued a plea to cut all probationary people, which could affect nearly 280, 000 people who’ve been employed for less than two decades by the federal government. However, some of these temporary workers, such as those at the National Nuclear Security Administration, were eventually asked to return to their posts. &nbsp,

Most federal employees have been given a delayed withdrawal present by President Donald Trump and his team, which would give them approximately eight months of income.

HAS DOGE REALLY SAVED$ 55 Billions?

How much money did the federal government become saving from the layoffs is unknown. However, the Department of Veteran Affairs, which has fired 1, 000 people, shared that it now expects to save more than$ 98 million annually.

    Poverty says are rising.

In Washington, D. C., employment states have skyrocketed in just the last couple of months, related with the large layoffs across the federal government.

In the week ending on February 8, 1, 780 employment claims were filed in D. C.— a 36 % increase from the 1, 310 says filed the previous year. In the first six months of 2025, there was a 55 % increase in unemployment claims compared to the same period last year.

To qualify for employment in Washington, D. C., and across the state, a person may have lost their job through no fault of their own, get ready and actively seeking work, and have made sufficient wages in the last year to qualify, which may determine how much money they’re eligible to receive.

Those eligible for unemployment can receive benefits in Washington, D. C., Virginia, Maryland, and in most states for up to 26 weeks or six months. &nbsp,

How much could the government’s unemployment benefits be affected by the firings?

Depends on the state where a person lives and their previous income to determine how much money they are eligible for unemployment benefits. In Washington, D. C., the maximum weekly paycheck a person can receive on unemployment is$ 444. &nbsp,

Following these numbers, if 200, 000 of the terminated federal employees receive$ 444 weekly of unemployment for 26 weeks, it would cost the federal government$ 88.8 million a week. Over six months, that comes to an estimated$ 2.3 billion in unemployment benefits.

In addition, 77, 000 employees have accepted the Trump administration’s deferred resignation package, which will offer them full pay and benefits till the end of September. Although it’s not known how much that will cost, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed it will save the government hundreds of millions of dollars over the long run. &nbsp,

” We are saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars with this buyout”, Leavitt told NewsNation’s Markie Martin. When you consider the overall cost, “at the end of the day, we are saving the American taxpayers money, and this will make our government more effective.”
