The suspected perpetrator, a 37-year-old Moroccan male identified by prosecutors as Brahim A, is one of the imprisoned people. He was described by the interior minister as an Islamist extremist with a bipolar background. Two of the criminal’s community members and a person who lodged him were likewise detained, the attorney’s office said.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the state has” full willpower” to listen to the assault, which he blamed on’ ‘ Islamist extremism, France has been on high alert for extremist challenges.
The suspect repeatedly said’ ‘ Allahu akbar” -” God is great “in Arabic- during the attack, the prosecutor said. He was armed with a knife and a screwdriver.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau told reporters on Saturday night that the suspect, who arrived in France without papers in 2014, was detained and found guilty of glorifying terrorism in the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and was later found guilty of this. Police experts had” detected a schizophrenic profile “in the suspect, he added.
The suspect was placed under house arrest as authorities attempted to expel him to Algeria after spending several months in jail for that conviction. Retailleau criticized Algeria for stifling the return of the criminals that the country is trying to deport.
Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced on Sunday that the French government will hold a special meeting on immigration after the attack.
They will notably study 19 countries” where we have the most difficulty in returning people without papers”, Barrot said on Europe-1 radio.
