A large asteroid, known as 2024 YR4, has attracted interest as both China and Nasa work to examine and mitigate the looming threat. Experts warn that a collision may cause destruction close to a nuclear explosion because there is a 1 in 38 chance of hitting Earth in 2032.
The race against time
Discovered in December by the University of Hawaii’s Institute of Astronomy, YR4 steps between 130 to 300 feet—large sufficiently to eliminate an entire area.

According to Newsweek, NASA has labeled it as the most harmful near-Earth object now being tracked. Although the odds of impact change, the risk is still high enough for serious celestial defense efforts.
China has wasted no time. Its State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense ( SASTIND ) has launched a planetary defense team, actively recruiting asteroid monitoring specialists on WeChat. The program mirrors NASA’s DART goal, which in 2022 properly altered an object’s way using a dynamic impactor, as reported by Newsweek.
How does Earth fight up?
Both Nasa and China are exploring displacement strategies, with dynamic impactor engineering at the vanguard. The asteroid is being monitored by the European Space Agency ( ESA ), which warns that impacts of this magnitude occur every few thousand years and can seriously devastate regions.
Bill Nelson, the head of Nasa, highlighted the bets. ” Our planet’s protection is a duty that everyone bears. This quest demonstrates how eagerly Nasa is to adapt to whatever the world may throw our way,” Nelson said.
What’s future?
With YR4 never expected to view Earth until 2032, authorities have time—but not many. While Nasa and China develop their security strategies, the ESA is regularly updating its trajectory.
