The proverb” War is politics by another methods” has been said repeatedly over and over again, but its roots have long since been forgotten. Carl von Clausewitz, a Prussian military theory, is credited with giving the quote, but it almost certainly came before him in the 1800s. The words” The Next Argument of Kings” were to be engraved on King Louis XIV of France’s guns in the late 1600s. More than a century earlier, Niccolo Machiavelli famously remarked that war was merely a means of achieving a desired social goal.  ,

What the ruler didn’t accomplish from the chair of his crown, you see, he may perform via the tip of his sword. Therefore, when you strip away the lofty speech and virtuous indignation, war was just a military extension of politics — the normal, expected consequence when words alone were insufficient.
But if conflict is elections with arms, what, then, is politics?
Politics is display business, girl! It’s the art of maximizing your plan, protecting your objectives, and lining your hands.  ,
And very seriously, the Europeans are WAY much at it than we are.
Americans have treated Western Europe like a globe of incontinents, a land of ill, ever since World War II’s end. They’re like our out-of-work aunt on disability — who apparently also has enough money for whiskey, weed, steak chops, and expensive vacations.  ,
For the last 80 years, we underwrote Europe’s national security. To prevent anger, we stationed British citizens in Europe ( and to prevent a work tripwire if a war ever breaks out ). We didn’t really grant them complimentary access to the American market; we also used our navy and other international bases to guarantee all of our allies free international trade.
And in returning, we simply asked for their help in the Cold War. That’s it: Choose area with us against the Soviets. It was the most good, one-sided deal in political history.

On one hand, the plan worked. Without engaging directly with the Russians, using radioactive Armageddon, or triggering World War III, the United States prevailed in the Cold War. That’s a HUGE gain.
But on the other hand, 80 years of infinite, unlimited American benevolence has conditioned Western Europe to see the United States as its individual piggybank: A state of saps and suckers at Europe’s beck and call. We exist to offer them.
Western Europe is virtually” trading blood for fuel” by ignoring Russian aggression and human rights violations in an egotistical bid to buy cheap Russian oil and gas. They want to pay BILLIONS for ( cheap ) oil, and then demand that America spend BILLIONS to arm Ukraine.
From Europe’s point of view, it’s a wonderful arrangement: Russia is being squeezed economically, so it’s selling oil and gas for pennies. And then, when Russia takes their money to buy more weapons, good old Uncle Sam is there to spend even , more money to arm Ukraine. That’s realpolitik writ large.
It’s also one helluva gravy train.

The Guardian just released a must-read article, “EU spends more on Russian oil and gas than financial aid to Ukraine — report” . ,

Despite the efforts being made to curb the continent’s addiction to the fuels that feed Vladimir Putin’s war chest, EU member states purchased$ 21.9 billion ( £18.1 billion ) of Russian oil and gas in the third year of the conflict, according to estimates from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air ( Crea ).
According to a tracker from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy ( IfW Kiel ), the amount is one-sixth of the amount of the €18.7bn that the EU provided to Ukraine in financial aid in 2024.
From the continent that once cried,” Let them eat cake”! it certainly seems as if someone’s trying to have their cake and eat it, too.
Vaibhav Raghunandan, an analyst at Crea and coauthor of the report, said:” Purchasing Russian fossil fuels is, quite plainly, akin to sending financial aid to the Kremlin and enabling its invasion. ]It’s ] a practice that must stop immediately to secure not just Ukraine’s future, but also Europe’s energy security”.
A few other juicy quotes:
The EU spent 39 % more on Russian fossil fuel imports in the calendar year 2024 than it set aside for Ukraine.
” Many countries were more generous in past conflicts. Germany, for example, mobilised much more aid, more quickly for Kuwait’s liberation in 1990/91 than it has for Ukraine in a comparable time period”.

In the third year of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia exported €242 billion in global fossil fuels, according to the report, with revenues” now squeezing closer to the trillion figure” as the nation adjusts to sanctions.
Just something to keep in mind, next time you read an article about our NATO “allies” criticizing Trump’s attempt to stop the bloodshed — and the war profiteering.
