Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency ( Doge ) has been the subject of a wave of resignations, with 21 civil service employees leaving on Tuesday to oppose what they called the “dismantling of critical public services.”
The original staffers, who were engineers, information scientists, and product managers, stressed their loyalty to the American people in a scathing withdrawal letter obtained by the Associated Press, but they also stated that they could no longer walk by as the Trump administration pursued large firings in the national workforce.
A walk against state scrapping
” We swore to serve the British people and preserve our oath to the Constitution”, they wrote. ” However, it has become apparent that we can no more recognize those commitments”.
The defections come as Trump and Musk’s aggressive push to stretch the government, which critics claim is politically motivated, are in high constitutional difficulty. The people also warned that Musk’s Doge hires were “political propagandists” lacking the skills needed for like a comprehensive overhaul.
According to their email, investigators within Doge displayed limited technical knowledge, generally prioritizing social loyalty over skills. ” Several of these investigators refused to identify themselves, asked concerns about political affiliation, attempted to pit colleagues against each other, and demonstrated limited specialized ability”, they wrote.
New York enters
However, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is stepping up to collect national staff displaced by Doge’s breaks. She launched an online application gate for state work on Tuesday.
” The federal government may say: ‘ You’re fired,’ but here in New York, we say: ‘ You’re hired,'” Hochul said in a recorded speech. ” In truth, we love national workers”.
Musk double down
Despite reaction, Musk remains unaffected. He made the announcement over the weekend that federal employees may receive an email requesting information on what they did last year. He warned that failure to respond had “be taken as a withdrawal”.
As legal issues support and social weight grows, Musk’s vision for state “efficiency” is facing an uncertain future. But with as many as 200, 000 national work already on the chopping wall, the real challenge may be just beginning.
