Florida is the first state to sign a contract allowing all state and local law enforcement to perform federal immigration jobs.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL ), along with Keith Pearson, a senior adviser to the Department of Homeland Security, stated that the partnerships would go far beyond resolving illegal immigrants in local jails.
” This is not just saying,’ Oh, if there’s an illegitimate alien in our prisons, next we’ll like let]U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ] pick them up.’ You must do that, DeSantis said on Wednesday night at a press conference held in South Florida’s Homestead. ” It’s also not saying that,’ Oh, we’ll recognize a ejectment or a subpoena.’ You must do that, of course.
” This is a task force model which will lead to street-level police functions”, DeSantis added.
Under Section 287(g ) of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, ICE may delegate a limited amount of authority to state and local law enforcement to carry out specific immigration duties under ICE supervision.
Under the Florida 287 ( g ) agreements, local and state police will conduct street operations targeting suspected illegal immigrants. Soldiers who do not engage may face sanctions, DeSantis added.
” In Florida, we have an legal duty to help and to be a part of the option. And this process power model means we’re not really going to say,’ OK, you know, if you’re around improperly, unless you end up in jail, we’re not going to accomplish anything”, said DeSantis. The action further increases the number of police and military personnel in the nation ready to detain illegal immigrants in the country, a day-one guarantee made by President Donald Trump.

Pearlson, who stepped up in her place, pointed out that each Florida sheriff’s eagerness to sign the agreement was deliberate and explained how the contracts may be carried out using a three-pronged strategy.

The prison protection design is intended to identify and detain aliens who have pending legal charges and are being detained by state and local law enforcement, and the job force model serves as a force multiple for law enforcement, enabling them to carry out immigration violations in their daily routines, according to Pearson.
According to Florida immigration czar Larry Keefe, the goal is to make Florida a leader among the states in achieving Trump’s immigration goals.
” We like to compete with Texas, Oklahoma, the other states. We are prepared to become the No. 1 state, the bellwether, the leader of the Florida blueprint on how you do it”, Keefe said at the press conference.

The partnership is eligible for some federal reimbursement. Additionally, the Florida legislature recently approved a$ 250 million budget to add to the operation this year.
Democrats are expected to be offended by the decision because they fear state and local police are unable to enforce immigration laws.
