Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, promised an “immediate and incredibly powerful response” to US President Donald Trump‘s “unjustified tariffs” on Ottawa on Friday.
Trudeau said his government would do everything in its power to avoid taxes in the wake of Trump’s onslaught on illegal drugs that are allegedly coming from Canada.
According to Trudeau,” We will continue to do that job and do everything we can to prevent these taxes from coming in, but as I said, we will have an instant and very strong response, as Canadians anticipate,” he was quoted as saying by CBC News.
Additionally, Trudeau added that,” the first thing on taxes is to emphasise that our government, and certainly all of Team Canada, chiefs, company officials, community leaders, are focused on one thing, making sure that come Tuesday and for the week that follow, there are no taxes imposed on Canada”.
The fentanyl crisis that the leader is referring to for the next week is centered around it, he added, and we are also facing it in Canada.
The American PM also raised concerns about the flow of fentanyl into the country, stating that “less than one percent of the fentanyl that enters the country comes from Canada.”
” And I’ve been highlighting for decades that less than one percent of the fentanyl that enters the US is from Canada. But we know that even that one per share, or less than one per cent, may be reduced, which is why we’ve invested USD 1.3 billion in strengthening our frontier powers with Blackhawk planes, with drones, with 10, 000 people patrolling our borders and keeping Canadians and Americans healthy. And that Canada is not the source of problems for the United States”, he added, as per CBC News.
Donald Trump, the president of the United States, announced on Thursday that he would start imposing tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico starting on March 4, and that he would also double the country’s current 10 % tax on Chinese goods.
In a Truth Social article, Trump linked the shift to efforts to curb illicit drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, into the US” We never let this scourge to continue to harm the USA”, he wrote, confirming that the tariffs may take effect as scheduled. On that day, China will also be subject to an additional 10 % tariff.
