On Thursday, President Donald Trump sat seated next to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and backed the country’s attempt to retake control of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean. This, according to Republicans, is a crucial test on China’s effect in the area.

Starmer started discussions last year to transfer control of Chagos to Mauritius, a former British colony and present close alliance of China. The Trump presidency had a chance to weigh in on the move because Diego Garcia, a joint military center run by American and British forces, is included in the island chain.

During his Oval Office meet with Starmer, Trump responded to the question,” I have a sense it’s going to work out very well.”

” They’re talking about a really long-term, strong lease, a very powerful lease, about 140 decades”, the leader continued. ” Basically, that’s a long time, and I think we’ll be inclined to go along with your state. We have to become given the details, but it doesn’t appear awful”.

Republicans on both sides of the Atlantic expressed dissatisfaction with the agreement.

The deal, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is” concerning because it will give communist China an opportunity to acquire significant cleverness.”

Sen. James Risch (R-ID ) argued that the proposed move “gives in to Taiwanese lawfare and succumbs to pressure from unexplained international organizations like the International Court of Justices at the expense of U.S. and U.K. tactical and military passions.”

However, Conservative MPs have pressed Starmer to sink the offer, not only for security concerns, but also based on the big sum the U. K. and U. S. may offer to Mauritius to remain leasing and operating Diego Garcia.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Wednesday asserted that the deal did not proceed without the Trump administration’s approval.

The United States and the United States share a common army and intelligence interest, and they must be satisfied with the deal, he told ITV, “because if President Trump doesn’t like it, the deal will not go forth.”
