The Social Security Administration is getting ready for” significant labor decreases.” It has offered current employees up to$ 25, 000 to resign as part of these changes.

In a memo earlier this month, the Office of Personnel Management advised agency heads to develop their reform plans, including workforce reductions, as part of the Department of Government Efficiency’s efforts to reduce waste in the federal government, by March 13th. On Thursday, the SSA sent a letter to its people outlining options for the start of its restructuring plan.

Offices that perform functions not authorized by legislation may be prioritized for reduction-in-force activities that could include the elimination of businesses and positions, directed reassignments, and staffing reductions, according to the information to people sent out on Thursday.

Additionally, the memo cautioned employees that the management “may resign employees from non-mission-critical positions to mission-critical immediate service positions.” Prior to the SSA’s adjustments, it also offered employees a variety of volunteer options.

The deliberate options include rescheduling after receiving a questionnaire, starting a job, choosing an extra retirement, or making voluntary separation incentive payments.

The VSIP is a “limited” solution that will be offered on a “first-come, first-served base through March 14. It would provide payments based on an employee’s pay scale classification, with employees on the general schedule 8 or lower receiving$ 15, 000, GS 9-12 employees receiving$ 20, 000, and GS 13 or higher employees receiving$ 25, 000.

Employees who choose the VSIP may be given operational leave through April 19, according to the organization, who may file for separation through the SSA. According to the message, VSIPs may be offered to those who choose to participate in the changes, such as volunteer early retirement, voluntary early retirement, or withdrawal.

The Social Security Administration’s workplace is being sent a message as departmental cuts have begun to affect the organization as a result of the Trump president’s DOGE attempts.

The Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity and the Office of Transformation, two SSA practices, were shut down earlier this year, and those people were given operational left.
