On Thursday, Mexico extradited 29 members of the drug gang to the United States, including notorious fiend Rafael Caro Quintero, the responsible for the DEA agent’s death in 1985.
The significant transfer, which is viewed as an extraordinary act of security cooperation, comes as Mexican officials are engaged in high-stakes negotiations in Washington to avert the Trump administration’s threat of imposing massive import tariffs of 25 %.
Lawyers from both countries confirmed that the prisoners who were transferred to the US were accused of a variety of crimes, including drug trafficking and, in some cases, death, among other legal crimes.
In honor of the valiant law enforcement officers who have dedicated their profession and, in some cases, given their lives to shield honest folks from the scourge of aggressive organizations, we will sue these thieves to the fullest extent of the law, according to US Attorney General Pamela Bondi in a statement.
Rafael Caro Quintero: Who is He?
One of Mexico’s most notorious drug lords, Rafael Caro Quintero is a founding member of the Guadalajara Cartel, a important person in the fall of contemporary Mexican drug trafficking.
Felipe” Kiki” Camarena, a US drug enforcement agency agent, was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in 1985, a crime that severely strained US-Mexico relationships.
Caro Quintero was detained and given a 40-year prison sentence for his involvement in the murder, but a Mexican judge dubiously overturned his word and let him walk free, much to the chagrin of US authorities, who were jailed and sentenced to 40 years in prison for his part in the death.
He was linked to aggressive turf war in northern Mexico, especially in Sonora, and resumed drug trafficking after his release.

After years on the run, the US made further efforts to capture him, and in 2022, after years on the run, he was recaptured by Latino forces. His imprisonment came during a high-risk activity that resulted in the deaths of 14 Hispanic Soldiers in a plane crash. In the end, a military puppy discovered him hiding in the bush.
Calling for his extradition grew more intense due to US stress, which included the Trump administration’s risks of trade taxes and the title of Mexican cartels as international criminal organizations.
The additional personalised gang members were who?
The other extradited figures were Miguel ngel Trevio (Z-40 ) and Omar Trevio (Z-42 ), the former Zetas Cartel leaders known for their extreme violence, according to the BBC.
Miguel Trevio, who was detained in 2013, was wanted in both the US and Mexico for facilitating murders and operating a global medicine kingdom. In 2015, his nephew, Omar, was detained and charged with murder, theft, and drug trafficking.
Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, the former leader of the Juarez Cartel and the brother of Amado Carrillo Fuentes, known as” The Lord of the Skies,” who died in 1997 from a botched plastic surgery, was one of the other cartel operatives.
Also, high-ranking security officials from various Sinaloa Cartel factions, cartel economic operators, and a suspect linked to the murder of a sheriff’s deputy in North Carolina in 2022 were on the extradition list.
Six of the 29 detainees, according to the justice department, could potentially face the provincial death penalty, which the Trump administration reinstated at the start of his name.
