Anita Anand, the transportation minister of Canada and the leader of the Treasury Board, has made the decision to run for the 2025 national elections, reversing her earlier announcement to step down.
Anand reiterated her commitment to giving Canada’s pursuits a second chance in the wake of the continuous tax dispute with the US. ” Canada is in for a significant moment in the history of our country. The importance of this event has just grown since I made my announcement to leave the public in early January. I look forward to serving and running in the upcoming national poll,” she wrote on X.
She cited her current efforts to improve trade between Canada and the US and to lower inter-provincial trade barriers, saying,” My late mother’s words ring yet louder in my ears today. You may serve your land, she frequently told me.
Anand, the second woman of Indian descent to hold the position of Canada’s national defense minister, had originally intended to return to school. After Justin Trudeau announced his resignation amid domestic dissention, she was also seen as a strong candidate to lead the Liberal Party. She opted to not be in the administration contest, though.
Trudeau’s administration has resisted numerous no-confidence requests from the Conservatives and relied on the New Democrats for help. But, after the New Democrats turned their back on him, Trudeau offered to resign and requested that the Governor-General provoke the House of Commons until March 24 so that the Democrats could elect a replacement head. The success will be chosen by March 9 and will be contested in the leadership contest between Mark Carney, Frank Baylis, Chrystia Freeland, and Karina Gould.
Numerous progressive MPs, including three Cabinet ministers of American descent, including Arif Virani, Harjit Sajjan, and Anand, had previously stated that they would not get re-election. Anand will contest from Etobicoke, the riding she now represents, while Sajjan and Virani are still absent. However, the Liberal Party’s standard website has yet to be updated about her nomination.
