Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, claimed on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump had purposefully imposed tariffs to stifle the country’s economy as part of an effort to ease conquest.
His remarks came as tensions between the two countries grew as the US imposed a 25 % tariff on all Canadian goods. Quickly, Canada responded in kind, causing a trade conflict that threatens billions of dollars in normal cross-border business.
Trump cited concerns about fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration as justification for the tariffs. Trudeau, but, refuted this justification, calling it” completely bogus” and claiming that Canada does not make a significant contribution to these issues.
When asked what Trump’s motivations were, Trudeau responded,” He wants to see the American economy collapse because it would make it easier to conquer us.” He also made note of Trump’s repeated comments regarding making Canada the country’s number one condition.
Trudeau remarked,” The United States launched a business war against Canada,” adding that Canadians are acceptable. We are pleasant. We will not fall from a battle.
Trudeau further criticized the taxes as a misguided walk, telling Trump explicitly that while he considers him a” bright guy,” the decision to impose taxes was” a very stupid thing to do.”
Following the Liberal Party’s leadership change on Sunday, Trudeau continues to work toward securing the end of US tariffs as he prepares to phase down as prime minister. In an effort to target British concerns, his government has taken steps, including a pricey border security initiative and the appointment of a fentanyl czar.
Trudeau reiterated his willingness to talk with Trump, stressing the need to” as quickly as possible” when the levies were escalating.
