Washington, D. C., Mayor Muriel Bowser said President Donald Trump’s conviction that the area needs to tidy up homeless camps was not an order.
Trump told Bowser that she must clear up homeless camps outside of the State Department and near the White House or they would be “forced to do it for her” in a Wednesday evening Truth Social blog.
” If she is not capable of doing so, we will be forced to do it for her! Washington, D. C. may be CLEAN and SAFE! We want to become proud of our Great Capital afterwards. Bless you Mayor Bowser for your work on behalf of the Citizens of our Country”, he said. ” Maybe you will be prosperous”!
When asked about Trump’s noted warning on Thursday, Bowser demurred.
” They’re certainly ordering us to do anything”, she said.
Though Bowser refused to call the warning an attempt, her government sped up the opening of an camp, by the E Street Expressway near Virginia Avenue NW, after the warning. That camp is near the State Department.
” We responded to the site identified”, she said, adding that there was no deal with the leadership when a worker called her to inform her about Trump’s desires. ” I said’ Thanks for the recognize — we’ll take care of it.'”
The district previously planned to accelerate up the opening of numerous homeless outposts between Feb. 27 and March 13, a area spokesperson told the Washington Post.
The governor also said many of the camps are on national residence, meaning the government is responsible for them, but that the city “is also here to support”. Bowser explained that the federal government does not have the same house technique that Washington does.
Monitoring WHAT DOGE IS DOING ACROSS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
It is questionable whether the city followed the appropriate method in clearing the encampment. People of the camp are supposed to be given two days ‘ observe, but some apparently said they were only given 24 hours to clean out.
Scott Schenkelberg, president and CEO of Miriam’s Kitchen, told the outlet that clearing encampments may make it more difficult for poor people to find housing:” Truly all you’re doing by closing an encampment — unless there are clear health and safety reasons to near an encampment — is hiding a problem and more causing trauma to the people living in the encampments”.
