The Wall Street Journal reported late on Wednesday that President Donald Trump had drafted an executive order directing the closure of the U.S. Department of Education, citing unidentified “people briefed on the issue.”
According to the Journal, a review of the order  “directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closing of the Education Department” based on” the highest degree acceptable and permitted by law.”
McMahon had criticized herself for avoiding declaring she had locked the section down during her confirmation hearing last month, arguing that this was a congressional act.
But, McMahon stated to staff that” Trump and the American citizens had tasked us with accomplishing the removal of the administrative fat here at the Education Department—a crucial final mission—quickly and properly,” according to the Journal.
Legal experts claim that a 60-vote majority in the Senate would be necessary to fully unwind the office. The key initiatives it oversees, including funding for students with disabilities and student loans, are legally recognized and have a significant political following. The section is the smallest cabinet-level company with only about 4,500 people as of last year. Polls reveal that the majority of Americans are opposed to eliminating the ministry, and Democrats have gathered to protest the plan.
The federal organization was established in 1979 under President Jimmy Carter, and it currently has a budget of about$ 80 billion annually.
The department is in charge of the Office for Civil Rights, Title IX regulations, financial support and student loans for college students, and other items. Additionally, it keeps extensive information data on every school in the country.
The department is also in charge of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, system, which has an amount of around$ 1.6 trillion in student loan debt.
Republicans in Washington, D.C., have argued that the Treasury Department could be in charge of the national student loan programs.
At her assurance hear, McMahon claimed that the Department of Health and Human Services could provide disability support and that the Office for Civil Rights may be relocated to the Justice Department.
The Trump team has now taken significant steps in the last six weeks, according to The College Fix, to clean both the agency’s diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and employees.
