Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire erupted immediately, prompting officials to remove nearly 300 people and issue instructions for an extra 30, 000 people at risk. There have been no immediate reports of deaths.
The mountain expelled gasoline and ash higher into the atmosphere on Monday, leading authorities to dismiss school operations outside and near a critical road connecting native communities.
” Some 30, 000 people more or less are at risk in these three ( jurisdictions ) and we are trying to have them evacuate or self-evacuate”, stated Claudinne Ugalde, the disaster agency secretary in a news conference.
The main threat from the mountain comes from lahars, dangerous flows containing dust, rock, mud and debris that may completely destroy communities.
Standing at 12, 300 feet (3, 763 meters ), Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire is among the most active in Central America. Located 33 miles ( 53 km ) from the capital, it last erupted in June 2023.
According to Guatemala’s disaster agency earlier Monday, whilst the volcanic materials flow remains weak to lower, it is anticipated to deepen.
Earlier in 2018, a dangerous volcano of Guatemala’s Fuego volcano claimed 215 life, with a similar amount reported missing. Streams of lava poured down its elevations, devastating the town of San Miguel Los Lotes.
