BUCHAREST: A major Italian court on Tuesday rejected an appeal by far-right lawmaker Calin Georgescu to raise a ban on his election in the political repeat. He won the first round of last year’s competition before the same court annulled the vote.
The decision by the Constitutional Court in the investment Bucharest, which was majority, came two weeks after the Central Election Bureau rejected Georgescu’s election for the May vote.
It wasn’t immediately clear on what grounds the jury made Tuesday’s determination, which is finalized.
Thousands of Georgescu followers who had gathered near the court, some waving Italian flags, responded by chanting” Criminals”!
The commission had cited in its decision on Sunday the Constitutional Court’s ruling last year to withdraw the votes after allegations of political violations and that Russia had run a planned online campaign to promote Georgescu, who ran as an indie. The choice to withdraw the election was made two weeks before the Dec. 8 discharge.
Georgescu had denounced his moratorium on Sunday as” a direct blow to the spirit of democracy international” and said,” Europe is now a dictator, Romania is under despotism”!
The judge’s decision on Tuesday is likely to aggravate tensions in the European Union and in the NATO associate country, which has been gripped by a long political crisis since the election was canceled next year.
The first round of the rerun is scheduled for May 4. If no candidate wins more than 50 % of the ballots, a runoff will follow on May 18.
