Portugal’s air force gave the government’s air force a green light for the purchase of Lockheed Martin F-35s from the US, but Portugal refused to do so. The nation then wants to consider another situational factors, including that of President Donald Trump. According to Politico, the cheerful defense minister Nuno Melo, who is a citizen of Portugal, rejected the idea to purchase F-35s from the US because of Donald Trump. We must make our decisions based on the political culture. The new US position in relation to NATO must prompt us to consider the best options because our friends ‘ consistency is a more important factor to consider,” Melo said.
” The world has changed, and this alliance of ours… may have limitations on use, repair, components, and anything else that has to do with ensuring that plane will be functional and used in all types of scenarios,” Melo said.
” There are several options that need to be taken into account, especially in the context of Western manufacturing.”
Given the uncertainty of the Trump administration, the US government may restrict access to the software upgrades and extra parts needed to make the F-35s fully functional.
Trump’s tense connection with Nato friends is a cause of Purtugal’s second-guessing of the US. Trump reiterated that the US would invade Greenland during his appointment with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte yesterday. Trump pointed to the Nato main,” I’m sitting with a person that could be very acoustic… we need that for global security,” Trump said. Rutte became odd and insisted that he did not want to “want to bring NATO into” a discussion about the US acquiring Greenland.
Greenland is a separate nation with its own state, but it is also a member of another Nato ally, Denmark. Trump’s confirmation that he would take Greenland came soon after Jens-Frederik Nielsen, a likely new prime minister, said that Greenland does not want to join either America or Denmark. ” We want to get Greenlanders, and we want our own future democracy,” Nielsen said.
