US President Donald Trump on Thursday suddenly raised the idea of the United States annexing Greenland, saying he believes it will eventually happen.
Speaking alongside Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte Trump suggested that the region’s power may be important for global stability.
” I think it likely happen”, Trump said when asked about Greenland. ” And I’m just thinking, I didn’t give it much thought when, but I’m sitting with a man who could be quite instrumental. You know, Mark, we need that for global stability, not only security, worldwide. We have a lot of our favorite players, you know, cruising around the beach, and we have to remain cautious. And we’ll get talking to you”.
Although Trump suggested that Nato may assist with the acquisition, Rutte immediately distanced the empire from the plan. ” As for Greenland joining the US, I would rather leave that out of this discussion. I don’t want to send Nato into it”, he said.
However, Greenland’s Demokraatit Party, which supports a steady approach to freedom from Denmark, secured an unexpected defeat in legislative elections. The group has openly opposed Trump’s efforts to bring Greenland under US control.
The result may give clear message to Trump — Denmark is not for sales, said Demokraatit innovator JensFriederik Nielsen. ” We don’t want to be Americans. No, we don’t want to be Danes. We want to be Northerners. And we want our individual freedom in the future. And we want to create our own country by ourselves, certainly with his hope”.
Trump has relentlessly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark, a proposal that has met with scorn and sturdy rejection from Danish authorities.
