Trump vows to ‘fix up’ Kennedy Center in first meeting since his takeover

During his first meet with the new panel on Monday, President Donald Trump made the promise to spend money on reviving the Kennedy Center.

After Trump appointed himself chairman of the board of directors last month and replacing Trump administration people with his hand-picked group, which stirred up a blend in the art and social world, the Kennedy Center, a well-known performing arts venue in Washington, D.C., is in for a change.

As the board meeting rolled out, Trump declared,” We’re going to put a lot of effort, a lot of money on ( fighting ) crime, and we’re going to put it all toward fixing it up.” We don’t want to leave marks on the gorgeous, white stone statuette.

He talked about preventing offense and poverty around the place and about changing its plan to include more popular Broadway musical numbers like Les Misérables.

” I’ve been hearing reports, and I thought it was very important to create this great,” he said. According to Trump,” It’s a pretty large part of the fabric of Washington D.C.” ” We’re going to make our country great again, really like we’re going to make our money great again.”

But, not everyone was in agreement.

During a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra, Vice President JD Vance and next girl Usha Vance were booed for about 30 hours by the audience. The vice chairman only made a wave in response to the market, but the incident demonstrated how divided the Kennedy Center staff and the Trump administration are.

After taking over, specific operations minister Richard Grenell, who is currently the Kennedy Center’s interim president, reportedly emailed the agency’s staff and stated that he takes “diversity and incorporation very seriously.”

Grenell allegedly said,” I have met with many of you, and I love that we are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, agnostic, gay, straight, black, white, Hispanic, and completely different. &nbsp,

Grenell has criticized the largely white audience, which accounts for the Kennedy Center’s supporter base, on social media. He took particular resentment over the Vances being booed.

” I find it troubling to see how many people in the audience appear white and intolerant of various political views. He asserted that diversity is our greatest asset. We must do better. We must welcome everyone.”

This video should challenge everyone to commit to making the Kennedy Center a welcoming place.

I find it troubling to watch so many people appear white and intolerant of various political viewpoints in the audience. Our strength is diversity.

We must do better. We must … https ://t.co/I2KuKIZuQ7

    — Richard Grenell ( @RichardGrenell ) March 14, 2025

Grenell’s remarks are noteworthy because the Trump administration has quickly stepped up efforts to reduce federal workforce and private sector diversity initiatives.

Trump’s dissatisfaction with the “woke” Kennedy Center is a part of what led to his junta over the bipartisan institution last month. The president fired Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter and expelled former chairman of the Kennedy board of trustees, David Rubenstein, in favor of himself. In protest, several board members, including TV producer Shonda Rimes, resigned. &nbsp,

The second lady, Susie Wiles, the White House’s chief of staff, Pam Bondi, the attorney general, and Laura Ingraham, a Fox News host, make up the Trump-aligned board. &nbsp,

In protest of Trump’s takeover, notable celebrities like Lin Manuel-Miranda, the creator of the Hamilton musical, and actress Issa Rae, canceled events at the Kennedy Center. &nbsp,

Vance, Wiles, Ingraham, Grenell, Lee Greenwood, a musician, and Maria Bartiromo, a host of Fox News, were just two of the board members who were present on Monday.

Greenwood, the singer of” God Bless the U. S. A. Trump claimed that the board should have performed during its meeting, but it was postponed due to high costs.

Trump claimed that because of the union structure’s high cost, it costs$ 30, 000 to perform a song for the board meeting. ” They wanted$ 30, 000 to move a piano. So we can’t have that.

Trump criticized other aspects of the former center’s management, claiming that$ 250 million was spent on “rooms underground” that “nobody’s going to use” them.

45 colleges are being investigated by the Trump Education Department for “race-based” programs.

He pledged to keep the Kennedy Center tidy and enticing, making it a destination that visitors from all over the world would enjoy visiting.

” We’re not going to have people using such a waste of money, such a terrible waste… we’ll make it great again,” Trump said. This represents a very significant aspect of our nation and of D.C., and I believe it is crucial to make sure that our nation is well-represented and in good shape.
