Russian President Vladimir Putin endorsed a US-proposed peace on attacks against energy infrastructure in a high-stakes contact with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He did, nevertheless, point out that before signing the deal, Ukraine needs more “details” from Washington.
Zelenskyy told investigators,” We will respond once we have the information from the US senator, from the US side,” adding that the US may act as a “guarantor” of the peace. As long as Russia adheres to it, he said,” Our side will keep it.”
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to continue military operations in Russia’s border regions, particularly Kursk, despite the proposal’s intention to stop Ukraine from more destroying its power grid. Putin’s broad peace words, he claimed, show that Russia is not yet “ready” to end the conflict, and he refrained from doing so.
Trump and Putin talk about a peace.
Trump and Putin spoke for more than 90 days before on Tuesday, where they discussed potential solutions to the conflict that has raged for more than three times. Trump stated on Truth Social after the conversation that he and Putin had a “very good and creative” phone call and that they both agreed to stop attacking energy and infrastructure targets.
We agreed to an immediate peace on all facilities and energy, with the understanding that we will work quickly to close this horrifying conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Trump wrote. If I were senator,” this war would never have begun”!
Trump expressed hope that a wider peace deal was “in complete force and effect,” but Putin refrained from announcing an instant complete ceasefire. The Kremlin argued that any conclusion to hostilities may also see a full stop to American military aid to Ukraine, a move that Kyiv and its allies have vocally opposed.
Zelenskyy is hesitant about Moscow’s purposes despite Trump’s press for a ceasefire. Putin wants to undermine Ukraine, he warned, signaling that Kyiv will maintain its conflict unless strong security guarantees are offered.
The US and its friends must find a balance between diplomatic efforts and Ukraine’s need for security and independence as negotiations are expected to continue.
