Why Mark Zuckerberg is trying to censor former executive's tell-all book on Facebook
The Twitter memoir describes how Free Basics was influenced by the company’s social and technological prowess.

A new publication by a previous high-ranking administrative that creates a disturbing photograph of the business ‘ leadership and moral failings is being suppressed by Meta, the tech giant previously known as Facebook. Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams is an editor’s account of Facebook’s inside dysfunction, business ruthlessness, and alleged involvement in international political crises.
According to The New York Times, Meta has filed a lawsuit to stop Wynn-Williams from promoting the guide, obtaining an incident decision that forbids her from speaking out in public. Careless People is still available for purchase as a result of the ruling’s impact on the author’s publication. Free speech advocates who claim that Meta’s actions contradict its claimed responsibility to open discourse have objected against Meta’s efforts to stop the book.

    A Tell-All That Slashes Deep

Former New Zealand minister Wynn-Williams worked closely with Facebook’s top executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg and past COO Sheryl Sandberg, for more than six decades. Her book portrays the company’s internal culture as isolated, competitive, and frequently absurd, giving it a profoundly ugly perspective of the company’s inside culture.
One particularly ridiculous tale describes how Zuckerberg’s superiors did purposefully let him get Settlers of Catan, aside from one occasion when Wynn-Williams won, causing Zuckerberg to accuse her of lying. In addition, Sandberg is accused of fabricating a tale about barely avoiding a fatal aircraft fall, which allegedly confused Wynn-Williams.
The book paints a depressing picture of how Facebook’s executives treat people, not just on their peculiarities, but it also paints a gloomy picture of the business’s approach to women. Williams-Williams describes how her leaders didn’t show her any sympathy after she nearly passed away during pregnancy. She claims that she was expected to remain entirely engaged in her job despite experiencing a lethal health crisis. She was given an unexpected performance review after returning from her maternity leave, in which she criticized her lack of sensitivity during her absence.
The complaints have been refuted by Meta, who has also distributed statements from previous Wynn-Williams’s company-backed statements. However, its constitutional approach has skepticism about the book’s claims being more accurate than the publisher is willing to admit.

    Business power or repression?

A non-disparagement provision in Wynn-Williams ‘ compensation deal affects Meta’s legal case. Although the decision forbids her from promoting the guide, it does not prevent separate reading of its content. Ron Charles, a reserve critic for The Washington Post, revealed that Meta had been in contact with the paper frequently about its strategies for a review, which is unusual for a business that is fiercely protective of its reputation.
Advocates of free speech contend that Meta’s behavior conflict with its self-proclaimed values. The incident, according to Viktorya Vilk of PEN America, is” a overt act of legitimate intimidation,” underlines the humor of Meta using legitimate pressure to silence criticism while positioning itself as a proponent of free speech.
In situations involving allegations of workplace harassment, the National Labor Relations Board made the ruling in 2023 that it is generally against companies to maintain non-disparagement provisions in remuneration agreements. Meta may be betting on a more favorable regulatory environment in light of the potential gain of a Trump administration, which has previously been business-friendly.

A Book Meta Wouldn’t Like You to Learn

The author’s most explosive claims relate to Facebook’s global influence, leaving out its domestic difficulties. Williams-Williams exposes secret negotiations between Twitter and the Chinese government, which are alleged to have led to the program shutting down Guo Wengui’s account. She contends that this is just one of several instances in which Facebook placed its business interests before its alleged responsibility to free conversation.
It’s unknown whether Meta may eventually be able to silence Wynn-Williams. Careless People is currently only a must-read for those who want to learn what actually happens inside Silicon Valley’s most contentious empire thanks to the company’s extreme response.
