Every year on March 20, the International Day of Happiness is observed to honor the significance of pleasure and well-being as common objectives and aspirations in the life of people all over the world.
This morning, which was established by the UN General Assembly in 2012, acknowledges that progress may be focused on enhancing human happiness and well-being rather than just expanding the economy.
History
Bhutan, a nation that has given Gross National Happiness precedence over Gross Domestic Product since the start of the 1970s, took up the action for the International Day of Happiness.
The UN General Assembly designated March 20 as the International Day of Happiness in July 2012 with decision 66/281.
Theme for 2025
The design for this year’s Happiness Day is” Caring and Sharing,” highlighting the value of kindness and generosity in strengthening areas and improving overall well-being.
According to research, performing acts of generosity and expecting compassion from others tremendously increase happiness.
Significance
The International Day of Happiness serves as a reminder that pleasure is a fundamental human right and purpose.
It goes on to explain the need for a more egalitarian, equitable, and sensible approach to economic development that promotes everyone’s happiness and well-being.
The evening even complies with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which are three crucial factors that contribute to happiness and well-being, and aim to end hunger, reduce inequality, and protect our planet.
Events and events
Globally, several events and initiatives are planned to commemorate this evening, including education seminars, community events, and social media campaigns aimed at raising awareness and spreading joy about the value of happiness in our lives.
People are encouraged to act kind, reflect on good aspects of their lives, and form relationships with others to improve the world’s compassion.

The statement points out that Afghanistan continues to be at the bottom of the list of nations that are the happiest and least content.
India occupies the 126th place, the same as it did in 2024, according to the document. India has seen progressive improvement in some social and economic signals over the past few years, but it continues to lag behind its South Asian neighbors Norway and, unexpectedly, Pakistan, who both placed higher in the 93rd and 109th jobs, respectively.
How to get involved
People can celebrate Happiness Day by acting as volunteers, spreading kindness, and supporting emotional well-being.
Simple gestures like showing love, engaging in meaningful discussions, and supporting group initiatives can make a difference.
World-class discussions, wellness events, and social gatherings aimed at promoting joy and optimism mark the occasion.
