Almost 9, 000 casualties were reported on movement routes all over the world last year, making it the deadliest year for workers. The tragedy was described by the UN as “unacceptable and avoidable.”
According to the International Organization for Migration ( IOM), a member of the UN, at least 8, 938 migrants lost their lives in 2024 on their journeys around the world, making last year the deadliest year since statistics started in 2014.
This season, which was also a report time, had almost 200 more sufferers than in 2023. Since 2020, the number of incidents on migrant roads has more than doubled.
The IOM’s assistant director, Ugochi Daniels, said,” The horror of the growing number of migrant deaths is both inacceptable and preventable.”
” Behind every number is a human being, a person for whom the loss is devastating,” he continued.
Asia is at the top of the list of migratory fatalities.
According to the IOM-affiliated Missing Migrants Project, at least 2,778 workers per year died in Asia only, or 624 more than the previous month.
With 2, 452 murders, a decrease of 703., the Mediterranean came in second place. With 2, 242 subjects, an increase of 367, the third-highest number of deaths on migration pathways was recorded in Africa.
Although the Americas ‘ death toll numbers are not yet known, they do not already reflect the final numbers. This includes a record number of migrants crossing the Darien woods between Colombia and Panama and 341 deaths in the Caribbean in 2024.
The IOM stated that the actual amount of migrant deaths and kidnappings is probably much higher because many of them have gone undocumented due to the lack of reliable information.
The death toll has increased for the past five decades.
Since 2014, IOM studies have been conducted. More than 74 000 refugees have since been reported dead or missing.
For the past five years, the number of incidents recorded globally has been steadily rising. At least 10 % of deaths have been caused by violence since 2022, according to the IOM.
Workers are frequently subjected to extortion by smugglers and groups. Similar to those in Libya, people are apprehended by specialists and held in camps in dreadful conditions. Others perish while sailing boats that are frequently little seaworthy to the shores of other nations.
Workers are defined as those who leave their homes on purpose or unintentionally for any purpose or length of time. Some seek refuge because they are escaping conflict or murder.
