” Liberty or death” That was the difficult decision that Virginia members proposed to him 250 years ago today. The Revolutionary Army and the Founding Fathers accepted the challenge, creating a new country.

How amazing that it has been two and a half generations since a smaller group of farmers, merchants, politicians, mariners, and slaves banded together to fight off the most powerful empire in the history of liberty. Not one of the social conflict’s remarks is as well-known as those delivered by Patrick Henry on March 23, 1775, in St. John’s Church, which was years in the making. However, thrilling speeches from ferocious Patriot poets in the months leading up to Lexington and Concord sparked a military problems.
Is living so precious or special as to be exchanged for bars and slavery? Henry emailed the delegation. Since Virginia’s imperial government, Lord Dunmore, was following British guidance, the House of Burgesses had been unable to convene for a while, the Second Virginia Convention was holding a conference in the Richmond religion. The colony’s militia’s legitimate authorization lapsed, which in part appears to have contributed to the exposed and thus more prone to British tyranny. Dictators ‘ main objectives are usually to make sure that the individuals are unarmed/unprotected, which is always their top priority. That, happily, did not materialize as the British had hoped in the British colonies in 1775.

Of course, not everyone at the Convention was persuaded that war was the solution, despite the fact that George Washington was one of Henry’s agreement accountants and that he would later help bring the Revolutionaries to win. Richard Henry Lee, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Harrison V were a few of the well-known delegates at the convention, but Henry’s proposal to “into a position of defense” was deemed too provocative and violent. Did the colonies actually want conflict?
But on March 23, attorney and politician Patrick Henry stood up and delivered a speech that would go on to become one of the most well-known in British history. The dungeons before the House is a terrible moment for this nation. Henry remarked unwaveringly,” For my part, I consider it to be nothing less than a problem of liberation or slavery.” He left no room for settlement or a grey area. Great Britain had been oppressing or ignoring the provinces for decades. Either way, at this point, conflict or distribution. The “painful truth” couldn’t be concealed by the “illusions of desire.”
Henry said,” Are we disposed to be of the amount of those who, having eyes, see certainly, and having ears, hear not, the things that so nearly problem their historical salvation?” Borrowing Biblical speech, appropriate for the church building, Henry said. The light of experience is the one by which my legs are guided. He was informed by experience that those who had trampled rights in the past may continue to do so. And now were American sailors and soldiers concentrating their efforts to maintain population balance in key colonial cities and ports.

At least Henry was unconvinced. We must fight if we want to keep the heroic struggle that we have been engaged in for so long and that we have pledged ourselves not to relent in until the glorious object of our contest is achieved. He wept. He argued that Divine righteousness was on their part. A really God is the one who presides over the regions ‘ fates and who will lift up companions to fight for us. And finally, Henry exclaimed the eminently popular phrase:
Boys does yell,” Peace, Peace,” but there is no harmony. Basically, the war has begun! Our ears may be suffocated by the upcoming storm that comes from the north! Our brothers are currently working in the field! Why are we sitting around? What exactly does a boys desire? What did they possess? Is living so precious or is peace so expensive that stores and slavery are exchanged for it? Almighty God, forbid it! I’m not sure which program others might choose, but I’m sure they’ll offer me either independence or death.

The rest is history as Virginia and the other territories engaged in combat before going to war with Britain. Thomas Jefferson later reflected on his fellow Virginian’s influence by saying,” It is not now easy to say what we should have done without Patrick Henry.” He was before us all in terms of upholding the Revolution’s heart.
I had the great opportunity to witness Henry’s reenactment in the Richmond chapel where he delivered it again in 2022. When we Americans were all witnessing the violent violation of our freedoms and the comfortable crisis-making of the Biden presidency with gloom and apprehension, that was in the center of Joe Biden’s president. In the 2024 election, We the Folks stood for freedom, just like the Patriots of 1775, and won. In honor of Henry’s 250th birthday, Donald Trump correctly declared March 23 as a time of celebration in honor of that day.

Each of us has a role to play, from training to social fighting to public service, but the restoration of our Constitution and protecting our freedoms is only just beginning. Our companions are awakening to the facts, but the Deep State is reeling, but they are not alone, and the ideologues continue to yell on the wall trying to drown out that fact.

As Henry did, does each of us rise up, accept responsibility for our liberties, our communities, and make the decision to pay the price for chains and slavery when we accept Henry’s challenge and pick liberty or dying.
