In response to debate between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Performance regarding the possibility of privatizing the email services, Louis DeJoy, who led the US Postal Service for five years, resigned on Monday.
The Deputy Postmaster General, Doug Tulino, may serve as interim president until a permanent replacement is chosen by the Postal Service Board of Governors. DeJoy, who took over the place in the summer of 2020 during Trump’s president, was a special Republican donor and logistics company operator, breaking the custom of career postal workers in this capacity, according to AP news agency.
His time as leader came at a time when the COVID-19 crisis, the increased mail-in ballot, and initiatives to reduce losses through administrative adjustments.
DeJoy and the Deputy Postmaster General have been working closely together to plan for this transition, DeJoy said in a speech.” I believe strongly that the business is also positioned and capable of carrying forward and fully implementing the numerous strategies and initiatives that make up our transition and development.”
He noted that” a lot of work still needs to be done to maintain our positive trajectory.”
President Trump expressed his desire for more reforms, even though the USPS is only four years into a four-year reorganization plan designed to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
Trump has thought about putting USPS under the purview of the commerce department to address financial issues at the$ 78 billion-a-year organization, which has trouble maintaining financial stability as first-class mail usage falls.
He suggested that he proposed shifting from the organization’s current governance structure under the board of governors to Cabinet-level supervision, shifting from the current structure to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Following DeJoy’s resignation announcement, Trump stated at the swearing-in ceremony on February 21 that” we want to have a post office that works well and doesn’t lose a lot of money.” He also mentioned that the company is considering doing that, and that it will be a kind of merger. The Postal Service will continue to be in operation, and I believe it will do so much better than it has done before.
