Mahmoud Khalil, a Syrian-born immigrant with a green card, was detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) for his pro-Palestinian protest, opening a new avenue for asylum seekers.
Mahmoud Khalil is accused of providing false details on his application for a green cards, making him unqualified for US citizenship.
According to court documents, Khalil is accused of omitting details about his continued employment at the British Embassy’s Syria Office in Beirut after 2022 and his position as a “political affairs officer” at the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees ( UNRWA ) from June to November 2023, according to ABC news.
Kali is currently charged as unacceptable at the time of his realignment of standing because he allegedly sought an immigration benefit by fabricating a material fact in deliberate misrepresentation.
Additionally, Khalil allegedly made a false claim about joining the Columbia University Apartheid Divest organization.
Khalil was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) agents at his Columbia-owned apartment before moving to a detention facility in Louisiana, where he is currently facing deportation.
Khalil’s First Amendment claims are” a red fish,” according to the filing, and their removal does not fit within Khalil’s legal claim.
The extra charges the government filed last year are entirely unsubstantiated, Khalil’s lawyer Marc Van Der Hout responded, saying,” The government’s statements are completely unsubstantial. They demonstrate that the government has no conclusive evidence to support the false claim that his appearance in the United States may harm foreign policy. Citizens and everlasting residents of the United States are free to express their opinions about what is happening in the world. This case is simply about First Amendment protected speech and action.
Trump has pledged to withdraw permits of international students who take part in pro-Palestinian protests and condemn Israel’s battle efforts since 2023.
” Many things have changed since Donald Trump’s poll.”
spokesperson Tammy Bruce said,” If you lie in your efforts to get a visa in the United States for any reason, or for a natural card, even there haven’t been repercussions, or we haven’t done things effectively in the past, or we haven’t done things effectively in the past.” During Monday’s State Department briefing, spokesperson Tammy Bruce avoided immediately addressing whether UNRWA employment history would disqualify visa applicants. With Donald Trump’s victory, many things have changed.
According to his legal representatives, Khalil was moved from his student housing to 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan, next to Elizabeth, New Jersey’s emigration hospital, before being transferred to a Louisiana Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center.
