The Supreme Court of Brazil may decide on Tuesday whether to prosecute far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro for allegedly orchestrating a coup attempt after the country’s votes were won in 2022.
The 70-year-old faces a jail sentence of about 40 times if found guilty.
Bolsonaro allegedly led a” legal business” that aimed to dislodge the leftist Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva, to whom he lost the primaries in October of 2022 by a razor-thin ratio.
On January 1, 2023, dozens of Bolsonaro supporters stormed the political house, Congress, and Supreme Court, demanding that the military remove the new leader, leaving a trail of death in their midst.
Five judges will then decide whether there is sufficient evidence to bring charges against the ex-president and seven reported conspirators, including former ministers and a navy commander, including Bolsonaro’s archrival Alexandre de Moraes.
According to the court, a judgement is anticipated on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Bolsonaro was accused in February of crimes including participation in an “armed legal organization” and the “attempted aggressive abolition of the political state of law.”
Bolsonaro has been the subject of numerous studies since his tumultuous years as chairman of Latin America’s largest politics from 2019 to 2022, and he has been dubbed the” Trump of the Tropics” after his political superstar Donald Trump.
The former army captain, according to the prosecution, had knowledge of a story to” correct” the result of the 2022 election and had plans to attack Lula, his assistant Geraldo Alckmin and Moraes, the judge.
According to researchers, the alleged story failed because the army’s higher order lacked support.
Bolsonaro is likewise suspected of being involved in the problems that occurred on January 8, 2023, according to investigations. He denies any participation because he was in the country at the time.
It’s a social test, it’s. What is the intent? When new presidential elections are scheduled for next year, Bolsonaro just alleged that he was a victim of “persecution” in order to remove him from the social scene.
Bolsonaro, who has doubted Brazil’s electronic voting system, is hopeful that the restrictions may be overturned, but has been barred from running for office until 2030.
He declared this quarter,” For the time, I am a prospect” for the 2026 voting.
The former president has compared his condition to Trump’s, who returned to the White House this season despite his own legal issues and after his followers stormed the US Capitol in similar fashion in January 2021.
Prior to Tuesday’s hearing, which is scheduled for 9:30 am local time ( 1230 GMT ), security at the Supreme Court in Brasilia has been increased.
