Protesters in Serbia gathered in big numbers on Monday to voice their opposition to the planned conversion of a Nato-bombed former military base into an upscale advancement supported by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US president Donald Trump.
The protesters in Belgrade vowed to end the development plans and restore the app’s history status. A significant agreement signed by Bosnian authorities, including a 99-year land lease in key Belgrade, had formerly been approved.
The show was a part of Serbia’s wider anti-corruption plan, which started in November when a railroad station’s concrete awning collapsed in northeastern Serbia, killing 16 people. The event sparked criticism of alleged fraud in construction safety oversight and political negligence.
The opposition was held in conjunction with the 78-day bombing operation’s anniversary on March 24, 1999. Serbians continue to harbor animosity toward Nato’s air campaign, which sought to stop Belgrade’s actions against racial Albanian hardliners in Kosovo. The destroyed military base has evolved into a rebellion image.
A Trump resort, advanced residences, commercial spaces, and retail establishments are included in the proposed development along with a memorial for the victims of the bombings.
The Kushner deal has been contested by Serbian criticism organizations and professional bodies, while Aleksandar Vucic’s management maintains that the initiative represents liberal urban development for the capital.
The Serbian Progressive Party, which Vucic’s ten-year command and his Serbian Progressive Party have been accused of restricting political freedoms and urging corruption and favoritism, are the focus of the continuing protests in Serbia.
Vucic has maintained assistance for Donald Trump, while fostering close ties with Russia and China. He has declined to participate in American sanctions against Moscow despite Serbia’s proper desire to become an EU member.
