A bill to ease restrictions on youth ‘ ability to work is being considered by the Florida state government.
SB 918, which Republican state senator Jay Collins introduced, may grant 16- and 17-year-olds the right to work without repercussions. If they were homeschooled or graduated from high school, teenagers between the ages of 14 and 15 may become permitted to work. Moreover, the legislation would permit teenagers 14 and older to work immediately shifts or before 6:30 a.m. or later than 11 p.m.
Despite being uneasy, Collins ‘ bill passed the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee on Tuesday, overcoming opposition from some of his Republican associates.
” This bill is also designed to target children as young as 14 and allows companies to routine all 16 and 17-year-olds for unrestricted time, overnight, and without cuts.” For most, that means they are in their first year of high school, according to Alexis Tsoukalas, senior scientist at the Florida Policy Institute. Why are we allowed to treat children like adults simply because they’re home or virtual-schooled, as we don’t allow children this young get a pilot’s license and we’re concerned about how much social advertising they use?
Collins refuted those worries, calling the policy” a parental rights problem.”
We’re not talking about Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, to be honest. They are talking about working at Piggly Wiggly and Publix, he told politicians. What I do think we should do is have up for parental rights and be aware that kids, which is the organization that is essentially incapable of taking care of their children, are not allowed to dictate when and how they really work. We may let them decide what works best for our 16 to 17-year-old children.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL ) has proposed using teenage workers to combat labor shortages. Florida passed laws in 2023 to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the workplace. The government contends that increasing the number of teenagers able to fill vacant positions may close the gap left by unemployed people.
According to a National Review evaluation, the condition is currently considering three fresh bills that would expand E-verify requirements. These novel bills would also target unlawful immigrants working in the workforce.

When teenagers used to work at these resorts, why do we insist that we need to buy foreigners, even fraudulently? At a roundtable next week with Tom Homan, the Trump administration’s border king, DeSantis said,” College students should be able to do this stuff.”
DESANTIS SIGNS IMMIGRATION BILL NOW INTO Rules
According to him,” Yes, we had people leave because of those laws, but you’ve even been able to hire others,” he continued, citing the 2023 law, which requires companies to use the E-verify software to verify a new hire’s immigration status. And what’s wrong with assuming that our younger people are currently employed part-time? That’s how it was when I was growing up, I mean.
Florida wouldn’t be the first position to relax laws aimed at reducing labour shortages. In response to labor shortages, Iowa and Arkansas are two of the states that have attempted to reduce restrictions on young workers.
