President Donald Trump said new taxes on imported cars and car parts would protect the country’s car market, preserve national security, and generate$ 100 million in revenue. The leader invokes Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to impose a 25 % tax on imported goods and services. The taxes will go into result in April but not before May.
The White House announced in a press release that the 25 % tariff would apply to imported passenger vehicles ( sedans, SUVs, crossovers, minivans, cargo vans ), light trucks, and other important automotive components ( engines, transmissions, powertrain parts, and electrical components ), as well as to additional parts that are already subject to the same process as the White House.
According to the number of American-made glad the vehicles have, there are carving-outs in the taxes for exports from Mexico and Canada. The taxes on these goods will be delayed until the presidency figures out the accreditation process, and that income depends on the certification of U.S. content in these automobiles and their parts.

It seems like a difficult task to decide how much of a car or car’s content is American-made and therefore exempt from the price, and it sounds like a lot of work for manufacturers and authorities authorities. However, the administration thinks that this action is crucial for both national surveillance and the industry’s health and strength.

- Americans purchased about 16 million cars, SUVs, and gentle vehicles in 2024, of which 8 million were imported.
The average domestic content, roughly speaking, is only 50 % of the 8 million American vehicles that were produced domestically and are not imported, or is likely 40 %.
- Only 25 % of the vehicle’s value can be categorized as Made in America among the 16 million cars that Americans have purchased.
- In 2024, the US trade deficit for auto pieces reached$ 93.5 billion.
