After sharing a Ghibli-inspired image of convicted fentanyl trafficker Virginia Basora-Gonzalez, who was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) last week, The White House sparked debate online.
The post, which was shared on X, responded to a previous White House release about her arrest, which revealed the immigrant’s teary-eyed confinement.
During a joint activity involving ICE, the US commanders services, and the ministry of alcohol, tobacco, weapon, and munitions, Basora-Gonzalez, a 36-year-old Dominican nationwide, was taken into custody in Philadelphia on March 12. She was detained after being deported in 2020 on suspicion of re-entering the country illegally.
Some people criticized the White House’s article for making fun of the immigrant, while another backed the imprisonment of the fentanyl smuggler.

In Pennsylvania, Basora-Gonzalez was first detained in 2019 for attempting to deliver fentanyl and assisting a murder. She entered a guilty plea, and she received a 12-month, one-day jail sentence, followed by four years of supervised release. Before serving her statement, she was deported to the Dominican Republic in October 2020.
She was removed, but she was still able to come back to the US on an undisclosed time. Following a tip-off on March 7th, ICE officials became aware of her existence. She reportedly worked as a baker at North Philadelphia’s La Tierra Del Caribe cafe.
Her court-appointed prosecutor argued that she shouldn’t be held in custody before going on trial, arguing that only illegitimate re-entry did not make her a trip hazard. The federal countered, however, that her preceding detention and conviction “cement the realization that pretrial detention is required.”
The White House has not yet released a statement addressing the discussion.
