More than 700 worshippers were killed when the 7.7 magnitude quake struck Myanmar on Friday during the holy month of Ramadan, according to a Myanmar-based Muslim firm.
According to Tun Kyi, a part of the Spring Revolution Myanmar Muslim Network’s steering committee, about 60 temples were damaged or destroyed in the area near Mandalay, the second-largest city in the nation, on Monday.
Whether the more than 1,700 people who had been killed in the disaster so far were included in the standard toll was not immediately known.
Videos posted on The Irrawaddy online information site showed people fleeing from the regions and some temples toppling during the earthquake.
According to Tun Kyi, the majority of the temples damaged were older, earthquake-resistant structures.
