Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Monday that Eli Sharvit will succeed the original military commander as brain of the home security firm despite the Supreme Court’s refusal to allow the current captain to be fired. Sharvit’s office announced this.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has chosen to appoint previous military commander, Reservist Eli Sharvit, as the next chairman of the Shin Bet, according to his company, following extensive discussions with seven qualified prospects.
Eli Sharvit: Who is He?
- Eli Sharvit held the position of captain of the Israeli Defense Forces ( IDF) for 36 years, including five of those times.
- Sharvit, 57, is the youngest of three sisters and was born in Sde Boker, southeastern Israel. He started his Navy support in 1985 as an officer, and he later rose to order some missile boats and keep important leadership positions, according to the Times of Israel.
- He served as deputy chief of the Navy’s weapon boat ships while leading a missile boat regiment in 2006 during the Next Lebanon War.
- He worked in the IDF Operations Directorate between 2007 and 2009, the single position he held outside of the Navy.
- He was then appointed commander of the Haifa naval base ( 2011-2014 ), and he later returned to command the missile boat fleet ( 2009-2011 ).
- Sharvit served as the Navy’s chief of staff from 2014 to 2016, before taking over the Navy as vice commander. He served until 2021, including during the Hamas fight in May 2021.
- After serving in the military, he moved on to senior posts in private sector organizations.
- Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, the head of the IDF, appointed Sharvit to a council of retired soldiers tasked with reviewing and evaluating the government’s October 7 studies in early December.
- Vice Adm. ( res. ) Eli Sharvit had recently participated in rallies against the government’s plans for criminal transformation. According to a Ynet statement from March 2023, Sharvit and another former military personnel took part in a rally on Tel Aviv’s Kaplan Street.
- Sharvit’s possible interview for a Shin Bet management position would not be unusual given his lack of knowledge of Arabic or Palestinian issues.
