A federal judge in the US has ended a constitutional dispute that had ensnared the Democrat in discussion and raised concerns about political meddling in the justice system.
On Wednesday, Judge Dale Ho decided to ignore the allegations” with prejudice,” meaning that prosecutors won’t be able to file a new case in the future. The Justice Department’s demand for a dismissal “without prejudice,” which would have opened the door to a possible indictment following the upcoming mayoral election, is challenged by the decision.
Ho noted that the looming threat of prosecution could influence Adams ‘ social decisions, especially those regarding immigration protection under US President Donald Trump’s administration. The prosecutor argued that the mayor’s ability to carry out the government’s immigration enforcement interests may be constrained by his.
Following months of legal and political drama, many Justice Department officials resigned in protest of the decision to drop the situation.
Adams had been accused of accepting a Greek official’s illegal campaign efforts and travel benefits in exchange for political favors, including allowing the entry of Turkey’s political building in Manhattan despite health issues.
The investigation was immediately pursued under US President Joe Biden’s management, but it abruptly ended when Trump took office. Emil Bove, the acting deputy attorney general, claimed that the situation was preventing Adams from assisting the federal government’s immigration assault.
But, former US attorney Danielle Sassoon in Manhattan objected, calling the action politically inspired and resigning in protest, according to The Guardian.
Adams, who pleaded not guilty to bribery and corruption costs last month, has denied any wrongdoing and insists he is still committed to serving New York City. In February, he told the courtroom,” I have never committed a crime.” He has even refuted speculation that he is currently socially dependent on Trump, saying that his actions are” only answerable to the 8.3 million New Yorkers that I represent.”
