A plan to eliminate any outstanding taxes that target U.S. imports was announced and signed by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. The action was taken ahead of Donald Trump’s statement on Wednesday that unusual products may be subject to a new plan of duties.

Since 1985, Israel and the United States have a free trade agreement that exempts about 98 % of American goods from Jewish taxes. Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, appears to be trying to find out in front of any potential tariff news from the White House.
In a blog on X, Netanyahu wrote that” now we canceled all of the customs duties that were levied on items from the U.S., Israel’s largest buying partner.” The elimination of customs duties on British merchandise is an additional step in the strategy that my government has been using for ten years to open the market to competitors.
The Knesset’s approval is expected to pass, but the lifting of tariffs on U.S. goods is also necessary.
According to U.S. industry statistics, full U.S. trade with Israel reached an estimated$ 37 billion in 2024, and the bilateral deficit totaled$ 7.4 billion, an 8.6 % increase over the prior month. According to Israel’s finance ministry, transfer fees on U.S. items total$ 11.3 million yearly, with the majority levied on food.
Israel is not the only country attempting to stop Trump from imposing taxes on it. Mexico formerly sent troops to the border to disband fentanyl rings and sent gang leaders across the frontier to be tried in court in the United States. Other than that, the replies weren’t all quite friendly.

Yet before Trump’s formal announcement, Canada, the European Union, and China imposed retaliatory tariffs on American goods. Rates of many consumer goods may rise unless Trump resigns or modifies his threats of higher tariffs.
According to Smotrich, Trump may respond by lowering trade barriers between Zionist products and companies.
The Jewish Knesset, where agricultural hobbies have a lot of control, will still need to approve Smotrich’s program. In an effort to protect the interventionist practices that Israeli farmers profit from, there will be a rearguard action. Israel’s crucial security interests depend so greatly on British support that, while the Smotrich strategy is not a done deal, domestic interests may take priority over its near-term international policy goals.
If Trump’s real goal is to force the world’s trading partners to lower their taxes, to which he would answer by lowering the country’s trade barriers, Israel’s movement should convince the administration to make some concessions. Israel’s trade balance with the United States is not particularly large, but it is not everything sometimes. The United States imports Jewish products like stone, metals, and glasses, but it also imports finished Jewish goods like industrial machinery, chemicals, plastics, and plastic.

Trump’s decision to impose tariffs is a calculated bargain, with the intention of boosting U.S. exports in a less restrictive, more aggressive global trade environment. If it succeeds, it may transform the American market. If it doesn’t, we might be paying a lot more for anything we purchase abroad.
