California which is the nation’s 5th largest market does not seem to agree with Donald Trump’s taxes as its government Democratic president Gavin Newsom appealed to countries to eliminate California-made goods from fees. ” Donald Trump’s levies do not reflect all Americans”, Newsom said in a video statement posted to X. ” And on behalf of 40 million Americans that live in the excellent state of California, the tentpole of the U. S. business … the strong producing state in America, our state of mind is around supporting robust trading relationships around the globe”.
Newsom, who was once married to Kimberly Guilfoyle, Donald Trump’s ambassador to Greece, added he’s directed his presidency to seek out new prospects to “expand business” and “remind trading partners around the world that California remains a steady mate”.
The Newsom administration said they are worried that California’s almond market, a big agricultural supplier, will lose billions of dollars as nations like China, India and the European Union shift to impose punitive taxes.
Donald Trump unveiled a big price program on April 2, the Liberation Day for America, in which he imposed a 10 per cent benchmark price on all imports along with higher rates for various countries depending on their tax on US products. The tariffs include a 34 percent tax on imports from China, a 20 percent tax on imports from the European Union, 25 percent on South Korea, 24 percent on Japan and 32 percent on Taiwan. Mexico and Canada, from which most U. S. produce imports come, are exempt from Trump’s latest tariffs, but the 25 percent tariffs that Trump levied on both countries last month will remain intact.
White House reacts to Newsom’s separate plan for California
White House spokesperson Kush Desai told Fox that Gavin Newsom should focus on the burning issues of California instead of trying his hand at international deals. ” Gavin Newsom should focus on out-of-control homelessness, crime, regulations, and unaffordability in California instead of trying his hand at international dealmaking”, Desai said.
