Dhaka: During the massive uprising that led to the ouster of then-pm Sheikh Hasina’s government last year, a court in Dhaka on Sunday sentenced 70 lawyers who were known to have backed the Awami League party to charges of “assault” and “attempt to death” of other advocates.
The doctors ‘ attorneys were ordered to be imprisoned after appearing on the wharf with bail requests, according to court officials who spoke to Dhaka’s Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Zakir Hossain. Nine female attorneys and former Dhaka Bar president Abu Sayeed Sagor were released on bail, but, by the court.
Prior to the expiration of the eight-week waiting time, the attorneys obtained a release from the higher court.
The doctors were escorted to jail trailers for Dhaka Central Jail immediately following the order.
144 attorneys were charged with rape and attempted murder in cases.
