The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility ( SAVE ) Act, which would require documentary evidence of citizenship to register to vote, was passed by the House in July 2024. The regulations will soon be away for a second vote.
Despite widespread public support for measures like voter ID and proof of citizenship, some Democrats still choose to support anxious election techniques. A staggering 198 Democrats cast ballots against the bill, and 10 Democrats did not cast ballots.
However, a few sided with Republicans in passing the SAVE Act, both in July and again in September, when it was attached to a continuous quality, clearly acknowledging the reputation of common sense political changes.
In July, 216 Democrats, along with Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez Jr. of Texas, Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, cast a ballot to support the SAVE Act.
The sole three Democrats in the group who voted in favor of the SAVE Act continuing decision in September were Golden, Davis, and Gluesenkamp Perez. In addition, Golden after remarked that” citizenship in the United States confers great responsibilities and exclusive rights in equal measure, including the special right to vote in American votes.”
These rules are noncontroversial to me and the people in my area, Golden continued.

The SAVE Act returning to the House hasprompted The Federalist to ask these five Democrats if they would once more cast their ballots to safe British elections. None of the members responded to numerous questions regarding how they intend to vote on legislation that Golden once characterized as “noncontroversial.”
According to The Federalist, the SAVE Act “would alter the 1993 National Voter Registration Act to require voter registration by requiring the production of film membership evidence.” Through state motor vehicle authorities, the NVRA allows pilot’s license candidates to register to vote. There is no enforcement mechanism, but registrants can speak to their membership status by checking a box under the charges of fraud.
According to the Help America Vote Act, states must test voter registration data against that that is stored in the state’s database for motor vehicle administration. The last four digits of a person’s Social Security number may be provided by a person without a pilot’s license.
Importantly, both of those documents can be obtained by foreigners, but neither one is ample proof of a voter’s citizenship. Additionally, in some states, potential voters can easily get past HAVA needs. As recently reported, California registered voters who do not have a driver’s license identifying number and a Social Security number is just submit proof of identification to record. Low-security identification cards like gym memberships, energy bills, and credit cards are some acceptable forms of identification verification.
Americans also increasingly want to prevent votes from noncitizens, as the SAVE Act would perform. According to a Gallup poll conducted in October, 83 percent of Americans support providing “providing proof of membership when registering to vote for the first time.”
