The IRS’s acting head apparently has plans to step down immediately after the announcement of a data-sharing partnership between the IRS and the Department of Homeland Security.
According to the Washington Post, Melanie Krause may withdraw through the Trump administration’s “deferred withdrawal system” for conflicts with the IRS’s way. Rause’s withdrawal will be his next this year as an IRS chief.
Under previous President Joe Biden, Daniel Werfel, the IRS inspector, resigned in January, while DougO’Donnell, his appointing replacement, DougO’Donnell, resigned in February. Former Republican Rep. Billy Long has been nominated by President Donald Trump to be the next IRS commissioner, but acting directors have led the organization while Long is awaiting a Senate confirmation vote.
The IRS made headlines earlier this week with its contract with the DHS that allows the agency to obtain tax details, including addresses, earnings, and other details, for people Immigration and Customs Enforcement is looking for.
The deal is described as a result of the Trump administration’s assault on illegal immigration, which was revealed in a court filing on Monday. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent both signed it.
Krause resigns ahead of the April 15 date for filing taxes for the IRS ‘ 2024 tax year. The agency’s departure comes as a result of Department of Government Performance efforts to reduce the bureaucracy’s size, like a number of others in the federal government.
