Yet as tensions between the two powers grew after Trump’s decision to increase tariffs on Chinese goods to 125 %, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed optimism that a deal with China is still in the works.
Trump praised Xi Jinping as a leader of China and left the door open for immediate deals.
Trump called the Chinese president “one of the smartest people in the world” and” a man who knows exactly what needs to be done, he loves his country,” adding that” Xi is a smart man and we’ll end up making a very good deal.”
Trump acknowledged that the Chinese aren’t now taking advantage of the US, but he said he did think about speaking with Xi. ” I believe that investing in the United States of America will be the best decision. At some point, he said, and then it’s off to the tribes.” We will get a telephone call.
Trump’s tariffs on all Chinese imports increased to 125 % earlier this month, citing what he called China’s “lack of appreciation” for international trade standards, raising the US-China trade war to a climax despite Trump’s conciliatory tone.
Beijing had previously acted by increasing taxes on American items to 84 %, which analysts described as a risky tit-for-tat increase.
Trump on Wednesday insisted when asked about additional price raises,” I don’t believe I’ll have to do it,” but the White House made it clear that the pressure campaign against China is still ongoing.
According to AP news agency, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed that China had” shown themselves to the earth as the poor players” and that its method is working to bring Beijing to the table.
China, but, appears slow to act. The ruling party’s main publication, The People’s Daily, referred to the US plan as “tariff abuse” and praised the country’s” strong resilience” while citing its “rich fight knowledge” from eight decades of trade conflicts with Washington. However, it emphasized that Beijing hasn’t abandoned discourse.
Trump has relied on private politics in the meantime. He quickly switched from industry to proclaim US military might during his remarks in the Oval Office before coming back to compliment Xi. We have arms that no one even knows, he said, but we’re going to strike a deal. It will be good to everyone.
Trump nevertheless uttered a convinced opin. He told the writers,” It’s a negotiation.” He continued,” You have to have flexibility.”
