Chinese President Xi Jinping made the warning that” there are no winners in the tariff war” and that confronting the international community could lead to” self-isolation” in his first public statement to address the US President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs.
According to China’s state media company,” for more than seven decades, China’s progress has been fueled by self-reliance and difficult work. Never rely on favors from others and not back down in the face of unreasonable suppression,” said Xi, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.
China will continue to maintain its commitment and emphasis, devoted to effectively managing its own affairs, regardless of any changes to the outside environment.
During a conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing, Xi made the comments, which implicitly made reference to the United States. The Chinese president called on the European Union to visit China in opposing unilateralism and financial coercion.
China and Europe should “accomplish their foreign obligations… and collectively avoid punitive abuse practices,” according to Xi, adding that cooperating would help “protect their own legitimate rights and interests” as well as “international justice and justice.”
Sanchez acknowledged the EU’s business disparity with China during a press conference following the meeting but argued that trade hostilities shouldn’t prevent broader diplomatic and economic ties.
We may work to address the major trade deficit that Spain and Europe have with China, Sanchez said. However, we must never allow trade hostilities to prevent China and Spain’s and China’s relations with the EU from developing.
Spain is the fourth-largest buying lover of China, with goods of approximately €45 billion worth of goods each year and exports about €7.4 billion.
In light of the Trump administration’s most recent tariffs, the EU is considering its approach to international trade at a crucial time. The Spanish prime minister will travel to China for the second time in just over two years.
Sanchez defied the EU discussion by calling for a” good business order” instead of the proposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles during his most recent attend in September 2024.
Before making his way to Beijing, Sanchez made a visit to Hanoi, where he and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed a joint statement to strengthen diplomatic relations to form a long-term agreement.
