Following a series of excepÅ£ional conversations on Saturday, the US is seeking a nuclear agreement right away, according to Iran’s speech, while US President Donald Trump warns of possible military action if negotiations fail.
Egyptian foreign secretary Abbas Araghchi, a former diplomat who helped come up with the 2015 deal, and Trump’s minister Steve Witkoff served as the speakers. These discussions are the US and Iran’s highest-level nuclear negotiations since the termination of the preceding agreement.
During the often direct meeting in Oman, Araghchi and Witkoff, a property developer, briefly spoke and said the discussions would continue on Saturday. According to Araghchi,” The National side also stated that a good agreement could be reached as soon as possible,” according to AFP, according to Araghchi, who was quoted by the Iranian state television.
” I believe we reached a very good base for dialogue,” he said. We both the other group want useless discussions for discussion’s sake, time losing, or talks that drag on forever, he continued.
The White House, however, described the debate as “very positive and constructive.” Their speech read,” Special Envoy Witkoff’s clear communication today was a step forward toward achieving a socially beneficial outcome.” Trump responded when questioned about the discussions on Air Force One, saying,” I think they’re going OK. Everything is important until something is accomplished.
Both sides ‘ earlier remarks made clear their positions, with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s adviser Ali Shamkhani praising Iran’s efforts to reach” a actual and fair agreement” and Trump’s desire for its prosperity while preventing nuclear weapons.
This comes as the US and Iran are negotiating a new nuclear deal after Trump withdrew from the past one in 2018 and have been without diplomatic relations for more than four generations.
Iran was supposed to maintain a civil nuclear program while preventing it from developing nuclear weapons under the earlier nuclear deal of 2015. Iran’s nuclear activities increased following the US’s punitive departure from the offer in 2018 under President Donald Trump’s then-current administration.
Recent reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA ) reveal that Iran has significantly increased its uranium enrichment. Iran was only permitted to keep a minimum enriched uranium content of 3.67 % in accordance with the original agreement. Nevertheless, its uranium reserves now allow the manufacture of a number of nuclear weapons, with some enriched up to 60 %, making only small technical adjustments necessary to reach levels required for weapons-grade production. Iran is anticipated to ask for permission to continue enriching its plutonium at a minimum of 20 % following debate since the US departure.
Although there are no obvious signs of the high-level conference, the discussions took place at a prestigious Muscat resort, the page of the 2015 deal signed during Barack Obama‘s president.
Iran claims that the Yemeni foreign minister facilitated these Muscat conversations. The American group had requested primary meetings. Iran’s foreign ministry confirmed the diplomats ‘ direct exchanges for” a few minutes,” noting that the discussions took place “in a constructive and mutually respectful atmosphere.”
According to Iranian official Esmaeil Baqaei’s post on X, the individuals spoke through the Yemeni foreign minister during” separate halls” during negotiations. Badr Albusaidi, the Yemeni foreign minister, described the method as taking place in a “friendly atmosphere.”
Iran is pursuing sanctions relief while addressing Israel’s actions against Hamas and Hezbollah, its friends. Tehran agreed to participate despite Trump’s strict sanctions and military threats, while the US, which is affiliated with Iran’s adversary, Israel, aims to stop Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
