Southern California was struck on Monday by a powerful but subdued earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1, according to the US Geological Survey ( USGS).
The tremor was felt 2.5 miles ( 4 kilometers ) south of Julian, a small town that is about 20 miles from the US-Mexico border. It began at an eight-mile detail and was followed by a number of smaller waves.
There were no earliest accounts of accidents or property damage.
One of the most seismically active regions in the United States is Southern California, which lies along the boundary of some tectonic plates.
In the past, the area has experienced a number of significant earthquakes, including the damaging 1994 Northridge earthquake, which left dozens of people dead and caused billions of dollars in destruction.
California’s most notorious disaster is still the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which sparked widespread fires and a storm, and left an estimated 3, 000 people dead.
