One of the six people killed when a small airplane crashed in Copake, New York, on Saturday was Dr. Joy Saini, an Indian-origin doctors and the family of former NCAA Lady of the Year Karenna Groff. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the twin-engine Mitsubishi MU-2B went down in a wet area shortly after lunchtime.
The journey, which was being flown by Dr. Michael Groff, Saini’s father, had left White Plains from Westchester County Airport and was headed to Columbia County Airport when it crashed about 10 kilometers from its place. Karenna and Jared Groff’s kids, Jared’s companion Alexia Couyutas Duarte, and Karenna’s partner James Santoro, were also killed in the collision.
According to Todd Inman, a representative for NTSB, the plane crashed at a higher rate of descent and appeared to be unharmed before impact. According to Inman, “investigators obtained picture of the final moments of the journey, which appears to show that the plane was unharmed and crashed heavily into the earth.” Although air traffic controllers issued a low-altitude sensitive times before losing touch with the plane, no distress call was made.
Karenna Groff, a biomedical engineering student and former MIT All-American sport person, was named the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year. She co-founded openPPE to provide safe masks to frontline workers during the crisis. In a 2023 meeting, she had stated,” Really, this reputation is a testament to my MIT women’s hockey family and all of the advice, support, and connection they have provided for me over the times.”
She and Santoro, a former MIT hockey player and big, moved to Manhattan after graduating. While Santoro worked as an expense connect, she had just begun medical school at NYU.
The plane had just received cockpit upgrades and adhered to FAA guidelines. Although officials have not confirmed whether conditions played a part, it was operating according to device flight rules. A final review is anticipated in up to two years, and the NTSB is expected to continue its on-site research for a number of more time.
