One thing was made clear at the White House meeting between El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele and President Donald Trump: Maryland male Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was falsely deported to El Salvador, won’t be allowed to return to the US. The White House criticized the media after this story broke, blaming Kilmar as a Maryland person because he is an illegal immigrant, and the Trump administration was forced to apologize for it.
What is the Kilmar Abrego Garcia situation?
Garcia, a Peruvian national who had lived in the US for the previous 14 years, was detained by ICE on March 12 this year and deported to El Salvador because the Trump administration had identified him as a crew member of MS-13. Garcia fled gang oppression in the US improperly in 2011 as a result of his immigration. A judge in the immigration court ruled in 2019 that because of the possibility of gang-related oppression, he couldn’t get deported.
The jury accepted his deportation because there was insufficient evidence to support his membership in MS-13. The imprisonment was referred to as an “administrative problem” by the Trump administration. On April 4, 2025, U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis declared that his imprisonment was unlawful and issued an order for his returning, calling the course of action “wholly corrupt.” On April 10, 2025, the Supreme Court granted this request and gave the government the power to “facilitate” his profit.
Why Garcia didn’t make a second trip to the US
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that if El Salvador released Garcia from the jail, the US would take a plane there. More documents had to be completed. El Salvador must decide whether or not they wish to transfer him. That is not our responsibility. In front of Trump and Bukele, Bondi said,” We would help it if El Salvador wants to return him. We may give a plane,” according to the Supreme Court.
Nayib Bukele called the launch of a slave a ridiculous concept. He added that he claimed that he had no right to release a slave before smuggling him back to the United States.
