The Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency ( DOGE ) has cut just one more federal job, making volunteers from AmeriCorps who respond to natural disasters and support community projects across the country.
Volunteers from AmeriCorps ‘ National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC ) were informed on Tuesday that they would leave the program early because of “programmatic circumstances beyond your control,” according to Associated Press.
According to the handwritten note to people, “new operating parameters” set forth by the Trump administration’s priorities and the government’s executive order creating DOGE had an impact on NCCC’s ability to sustain “program operations.”
According to the letter, individuals who receive a life income and are covered for basic costs may be paid until the end of April.
Additionally, members who have served for 15 % or more of their name would be eligible for a prorated volume, but those who have served for less would not.
More than 2, 000 people, between the ages of 18 and 26, serve for almost a month and are assigned to jobs with non-profits and community organizations, or the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to the site of AmeriCorps.
The individuals are particularly apparent following natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and Hurricane Helene in September 2024. Since 1999, the organization has served 8 million ( 80 lakh ) service hours on nearly 3,400 disaster projects, according to a social media post from March.
Additionally, it provides funding for upcoming educational bills or student loans for members who have completed their 1,700-hour company terms. This service year, that advantage was worth about$ 7,300.
When there are discussions about finances cuts, funding for AmeriCorps and NCCC has long been a part of the Congress ‘ discussions. According to the national company’s funds, NCCC funding was estimated to be at around$ 38 million for the past governmental.
