During a major week-long operation aimed at people with criminal histories and gang affiliations, immigration and customs enforcement ( ICE ) agents made 206 illegal immigrants arrests in New York City and surrounding areas, according to the New York Post. Among those detained, 121 had previous beliefs or pending costs for serious crimes like murder, rape, arson, sexual offenses against minors, and several drug and weapons violations.
Edimar Colmenares Mendoza, who is alleged to be associated with the harsh Cuban group Tren de Aragua, was one of the people detained. She was taken into custody in the Bronx at a site that the NYPD had recently raided for group activity. Users of gangs like MS-13, Sureos, and 18th Street as well as people who have been found guilty of crimes like murder, assault, and drug trafficking were among the other significant arrests.
According to ICE officials, some of those detained had recently been released as a result of New York City’s sanctuary city policies ‘ prohibition on federal emigration detainers. Unless a prosecutor issues a fugitive detainer, these rules forbid NYPD cooperation with ICE.
The scope of the activity extended to Lower Hudson Valley and Long Island. The most harmful criminals were the target, according to ICE leaders, and that was being done.
Residents of the damaged neighborhoods expressed relief, especially regarding the removal of people linked to violent gangs.
